Making the Invisible Visible: Black Women 365 Days of the Year

Following the success of 100 Black Women Who Have Made A Mark, Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage are delighted to launch a new project for 2026; Making the Invisible Visible: Black Women 365 Days of the Year.

Each day will showcase a different woman, whose story has shaped Black British or global Diasporic history; many of whom remain overlooked or under-celebrated in mainstream narratives. This will take the form of a rolling programme of short films, released throughout the year to keep these stories in daily circulation and to create an evolving constellation of leadership, resistance, artistry and enduring impact.

If you would like to refer to the published interviews on Serendipity's YouTube channel for inspiration, an example is linked below:

Questions

Please answer the following questions:

1. Who are you, really?
Tell us your name, and describe what you do in the world — not just your job title, but the role you play, the energy you bring, or the questions that drive your practice.

2. What does your work look like in motion?
Share a little about your work as it unfolds day to day. What are you exploring, making, questioning, or holding space for? What matters most to you in how you work?

3. A moment, person, or project that shaped you
Tell us about an experience, individual, or initiative that has significantly influenced your journey — personally, professionally, or creatively. What shifted for you, and why has it stayed with you?

4. Something we might not see at first glance
What’s one thing about you — a value, habit, perspective, or story — that you wish more people understood or recognised?

5. Holding joy and momentum
How do you acknowledge the small wins, care for your wellbeing and keep yourself motivated when the work feels challenging or slow?

Filming Guidance

In order to focus and showcase the fantastic work of the women in this series whilst ensuring consistency across the interviews, please read through the following guidance.

  • This is a simple piece to camera which can be filmed on a smart phone.
  • All videos should be HD quality, with a resolution of at least 1920 x 1080. (16:9, minimum 1080p).  The recommended file formats are H.264, .mov or .mp4 file.
  • Video must be filmed landscape (horizontally), not portrait (vertically).
  • If possible use a tripod, phone stand or rest your phone against a stack of books to ensure a steady picture.  Please avoid using zoom to reduce camera shake / unstabilised footage.
  • The video frame should be in line with your head and shoulders and should be against a plain / neutral background, if possible.
  • Where possible film in natural light or near a window to get the best possible picture.  The light source should be somewhere behind the recording device.  If the light source is behind you, it will cause a silhouette effect.
  • Choose somewhere quiet to film.  Avoid filming outside as the wind sounds very loud through camera microphones and avoid places with strong echoes.
  • Please keep your video submission as unedited as possible.  Please not add any transitions, text, effects, images or branding.  Videos using Generative AI will not be accepted.
  • Please aim to keep your response to each question to around 1-2 minutes.
